At BANSWARA COMMUNITY MEMEBERS FROM LIFE PROJECT VILLAGES ARE TAKING INITIATIVE TO MAKE MGNREGS MORE ECOLOGICAL FRIENDLY!
ON 19TH JUNE 2012

An ecological act is one of the best features of the MGNREGA as it designates a balance between human action and natural resources creating a sustainable economic security through green jobs. The MGNREGS must be strengthen and revamped to provide not just wages for work done but work that will make ecological regeneration possible.

The activity (as per the act) under MGNREGS are largely linked to water, soil and land which are the key natural resource determining agriculture and livestock production. But at the ground level most of the activities are in the form of road construction, well deepening, pond deepening, which in turn is affecting the ecological system of the earth. As more deepening of well and pond leads to decline of ground water table and thus making the context rainfed or creating the situation of drought!

Looking the above; communities from the LIFE project villages have demonstrated a LIFE team at a peace rally on in the project villages to generate awareness on the type of work need to include in the MGNREGS. It’s the first time in the region that any rally is focus on ‘the type of work under MGNREGS”

Interesting point about this rally is that there is no financial support for this through the LIFE project; it is mainly the initiate of CBO members.

The event has also captured by the leading news paper-Rajasthan Patrika.
